Turned Red Earth debuts at Essex Book Festival

At the Essex Book Festival last Sunday, Justin Hopper and I read a working version of Turned Red Earth, a poetry piece inspired by and sampled from the diaries and letters home of young men fighting in France during WW1.

The piece includes the words of German, French, English and American soldiers, as well as an imagined female presence. Its starting point is the vivid and loving detail with which many of these soldiers recorded the natural world around them, and the striking persistence of small normalities in a time of war.
